Mti and the Magic of Kwanzaa

In this episode of The International Book Show, host Makonnen Sankofa interviews author Mishal Akeba Coubry to explore her children’s book, Mti and the Magic of Kwanzaa—a vibrant story that brings the principles of Kwanzaa to life.

Drawing on her Jamaican storytelling roots and journey to the UK, Mishal shares how oral traditions inspire her work and shape the book’s message of resilience, unity, and community.

At its heart is Mti, a small but determined tree who overcomes adversity using Kwanzaa’s seven principles, brought to life through rich, hand-painted illustrations.
